Finding balance and tranquillity through reflexology.

Welcome to Pause for Thought Reflexology in Gloucester

Thank you for taking the time to visit my website. My name is Sandra Pelan, and I am a fully qualified Level 5 Clinical Reflexologist based in Gloucester. I work from the treatment room within my home in Abbeymead, but also offer home visits for clients with specific needs which make accessing my treatment room difficult. As well as a Reflexologist, I am also a Registered Nurse working part-time in a local hospice and therefore have a particular interest in Palliative Reflexology. Having benefited from Reflexology treatments myself, I am passionate about sharing this wonderful treatment with others.

Whether you are looking for support with an existing health condition, want to reduce your day-to-day stress levels or would just like a little "me time", reflexology is the ideal holistic therapy. My aim is to help you improve your wellbeing, both physical and emotional making you feel more relaxed, energised and balanced with specially-tailored Reflexology treatments.

I am a full member of the Association of Reflexologists and also registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the theory that the feet and hands are a reflection of the body as a whole, with specific areas corresponding to areas of the body. By applying varying pressure to these reflex points on the feet or hands a feeling of deep relaxation can be achieved which can help the body restore its balance and wellbeing. Evidence has been found suggesting that some form of foot and hand therapy was practised in China and Egypt more than four thousand years ago.

The holistic approach...

Reflexology aims to treat the individual as a whole, creating a state of harmony in both body and mind. It has the benefit of also being a deeply relaxing therapy, and during periods of relaxation the body takes the opportunity to heal, restore and energise itself.

Reflexology is for all ages!

Reflexology is suitable for all ages, from baby to adult, and can be especially helpful for long-term and recurring conditions. Reflexology does not diagnose and does not cure though; as a complementary therapy it should not be considered an alternative to conventional medicine.

Balance

Reflexology is a wonderful way of restoring and maintaining your body’s healthy balance and general wellbeing. It helps to reduce the stresses and tensions that come with busy lifestyles, giving us an opportunity to reflect on the mind as well as the body.

Relaxation

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment which has been shown to be effective at bringing down anxiety levels and reducing the stress response within the body in a natural and healthy way. Long term stress can have a detrimental effect on both the mind and the body.

Health

While it is not a cure, Reflexology can be particularly helpful in supporting clients with various health conditions, especially long term conditions.

What issues can Reflexology help with?

Here are a few of the more common conditions that can be supported through Reflexology:

Headaches and migraines

Stress & anxiety

Hormonal imbalances

High blood pressure

Insomnia & sleep disorders

Pain including the pain of fibromyalgia

Women’s health including menstrual issues and the menopause

It is usually safe to have Reflexology alongside conventional medicine, but if you are currently having any medical treatment you are advised to speak to your GP.

Some frequently asked questions...

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different and the response to Reflexology can be immediate or sometimes take longer than one appointment, but often benefits can be seen after 4-5 sessions. Following an initial consultation, I will advise you on the number of Reflexology sessions I think you may need, these will normally ideally be weekly treatments initially in order that the body can properly begin the self-healing process.

What happens in a treatment?

The Reflexology I deliver is performed entirely on the feet, ankles or hands, so the most you’ll have to do is take off your socks and roll up your trousers! During the treatment the client lies on their back on a reclining chair, supported by pillows and covered with a soft blanket to keep them warm.

And don’t worry - reflexology doesn't tickle! Many clients come to me with ticklish feet or worried about their feet being touched, but find they can relax and enjoy the benefits of Reflexology.

Does reflexology hurt?

You might find some areas feel sensitive to the touch, but Reflexology does not involve hard pressing in the way something like a sports massage might. As a therapist I will be aware of the status of your feet, noticing how they feel, the temperature and colour. All these things play a part in understanding which areas of your body - as reflected through your feet - require a bit more care and attention.

Can you diagnose my health problems?

Reflexologists cannot claim to diagnose or cure, but during a treatment we may get 'feedback' as to which parts of the body are working well and which are not. Sometimes Reflexology will highlight a specific area which is struggling or working hard to maintain your wellbeing; if a particular reflex point shows this kind of reaction I'll discuss it with you at the end of the session.

Can I keep on having reflexology?

After an initial course of treatment many people choose to check in monthly to help maintain their general wellbeing, or as a scheduled 'de-stress'. Other clients will get back in touch, arranging treatments as and when they need them.
